Russell Athletic Bowl

This is almost always a game of sadness - featuring two teams that had higher hopes but for one reason or another, things fell apart and they wound up in Orlando on a Tuesday night in late December.

No. 10 North Carolina vs. No. 17 Baylor

I had no way to watch a full quarter of this game at work, just didn't happen with the 5:30 start time. I saw some of the first quarter and then headed home.  By the time I got home, it was well into the second quarter.  This game crosses over with the next game, so I'll only be able to watch the full fourth quarter.

In the end it really didn't matter.

As I noted, I was making my way home from work while this game was on.  I stopped to get gas at Kroger with $1 off per gallon rewards points. So, 99-cents per gallon in my large Jeep tank. While pumping my gas, at the adjacent pump, there was a woman on her phone not moving while people waited in line to get gas.

It's the end of the month and people are using their points but this ignoramus just kept running her mouth without moving to a parking spot to finish her life or death conversation.  This is where we are, courtesy of cell phones - nothing else matters but you.  I was behind an idiot driving who almost stopped on the interstate as you could see him start checking messages.

Anyhow...

Baylor was missing their starting quarterback, their backup quarterback, an All American wide receiver and their number one running back, this had to be a shoe-in for North Carolina, right?

Hardly.  The Bears put up over 600 yards rushing and 756 yards total offense in somewhat of a rout of the Tar Heels.  This was the same team a lousy Texas squad beat - there is no making sense of what happens in college football.

What inspired the Bears?  Maybe Forrest Gump, it's on TNT all the time.

Baylor 49  North Carolina 38

My pick:  North Carolina, of course.  Can you imagine a pro team without all those position players?  I'm pretty much out of it in my picks pool.

Game notes:

-At some point, doesn't North Carolina figure out what Baylor is doing with their running game and stop them?  Evidently, no they don't.  Baylor had a back up run for over 300 yards. That's embarrassing.

Baylor had 333 yards rushing in the first half, that set a Russell Athletic Bowl record for most rushing yards - in a game.

-At one point late in the game, the ESPN announcers said if it weren't for the injuries, Baylor would have been in the playoff.  I guess they didn't bother to notice Baylor's defense was terrible.  North Carolina literally looked like they never saw a running game before.

-ESPN is also doing something called Hot Topics, no doubt to satisfy some added value sponsor need.  They may want to put a little more time in on these graphics.

Boise State beat Northern Illinois, not Northern Iowa.  ESPN went as far as not just getting the team wrong but using the wrong team's logo.  They were committed to it.

-Player swag:  Always the best stuff, they must feel bad for these disappointed teams.  $350 Best Buy shopping trip; Timely Watch Co. watch; ISlide footwear; beach towel; Russell Athletic performance pullover

-What did I eat?   Some nuts and pretzels, and then some cheese and salami.  Just throwing health to the wind.

Still two more games to deal with.
