First game of the day that I caught from the start although I don't think anyone was too excited for it except Bobcat and Mountaineer fans.
Ohio University vs. Appalachian State
I always have to look up how to spell Appalachian. This was the Mountaineers first ever bowl game as they've moved up to the Sun Belt conference. Who knew? This was the first time the two teams have ever played - and to do it in glorious Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.
Ohio is the first of seven MAC teams in bowl games. The MAC has improved as a conference over the years but when seven teams from the conference are needed you know there are too many bowl games.
First quarter completed, the Mountaineers take a 7-0 lead and I'm off to the next game. There will be plenty of time to see what happens at the end.
While watching the Cure Bowl, Ohio did all the scoring, 24 straight points. But here came the fireworks. App State flipped the script and put up four straight touchdowns to grab a 28-24 lead. Ohio made it interesting with a safety and then a go-ahead field goal. App State, down to their last drive, got some key plays setting up the game winning field goal as time expired. Now that's the way to win your first bowl game!
App State 31 Ohio U. 29
My pick: Appalachian State, 3-0
Game notes
-Exactly how many reporters were at the Ohio U post game presser?
Depressing.
-I realized I have not been digging up the swag players get for participating.
Gift suite; Fossil watch; commemorative game coin and case; cap and beanie; Ogio duffle bag; Big Game autograph football. Pretty typical stuff.
