Once again, the Utah vs. Duke basketball game comes into play with watching this game. I had to finish a full quarter of the New Mexico Bowl which meant I missed the first few minutes of this game. And I missed a lot.
Utah vs. BYU
This game is a huge deal in the state of Utah, called The Holy War. Even for folks who are pretty religious, things get contentious in this rivalry.
And the Utes did go, thanks to five BYU turnovers in the first quarter. It was 14-0 Utah when I flipped on the game and it was only a couple minutes in. BYU turned the ball over on its first five possessions and Utah scored a touchdown on each of them.
Surrender Cobra? Oh yes.
Surrender in deed. This looked like it was going to be a 72-7 beat down. But college football is a funny game. BYU shook off the turnovers, and slowly came back while Utah didn't score again.
I did have to leave this game to catch a live quarter of the Camellia bowl but was able to come back and watch Utah hang on for the win, 35-28.
My pick: Utah, 2-0.
Game notes:
-This game was worth watching just to see Utah Punter Tom Hackett, who played Australian rules football before becoming a two-time Ray Guy award winner. Hackett is amazing - his punts look like 60 sand wedge shots that back up perfectly once they hit the ground. Here's Hackett on the Holy War rivalry.
"I'm lucky enough to be one of the many players on the football team
that actually has never lost to these bastards. Which leads me to end
and say, this is Utah's world and BYU is living in it."
A punter! The Raiders will probably draft the guy in the third round.
-ESPN/ABC finally remembered that Brent Musberger worked for the network and had him call a game someone was watching. He's been hidden away on the SEC Network. A well known gambler, Brent was in heaven calling this game - it was obvious he laid some cash on Utah. Once the the score grew to 35-0, Brent said he felt sorry for his BYU friends because they can't drink. We even got a "You're looking live!" Way to go Brent.
