New Orleans Bowl

The fifth and final game of the day, a 9pm start on Saturday night - chances of me watching until the end, zero. I was football-ed out and that Cure Bowl did not help.

Arkansas State vs. Louisiana Tech

The best known player in this game is former Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel who was supposed to be the savior of Gainesville.  Not so much.  He transferred and this was his last game.  He made the most of it as did Kenneth Dixon.

An entertaining first half with the two teams going back and forth.  La. Tech came out of the half fired up and smashed the Red Wolves for 30 points, game.

Driskel threw for 458 yards and three TD's while Dixon had four touchdowns and was the game MVP.  Dixon's game was so powerful his numbers blew off.

Dixon may be one of the best players you never heard about. He has 86 career touchdowns, that's now the record. He'll play on Sundays.

La. Tech 47  Ark. State 28

My pick:  Arkansas State (4-1)  I ignored the Red Wolves poor defensive stats, thinking this would be a shoot out.

Game notes:

-What did I eat today? Some peanuts, Snyder's pretzel bits (bacon n' cheese flavor, not so good), some soppressata and cheese, two egg rolls.  I also had a couple Wild Turkeys and smoked an Alec Bradley cigar. Health is my number one concern.

-Kind of a disappointing crowd for a game that always features a team from Louisiana.

-First game with an injury to an official.  Strained calf muscle sidelined the field judge.

He doesn't seem all that upset that he wasn't out there to finish this one off.

-Bowl swag:  Nothing special, Gift suite; Fossil watch.  Hey, these guys got to spend time in New Orleans, that's gift enough.

So, 4-1 record in the first day of games.  No game on Sunday because the NFL.  Monday, the Miami Beach Bowl and it's also Man Day where my sons and I go out to finish Christmas shopping, have lunch, find some activity and make a trip to the liquor store. It is the holidays.
