Ghosts of Bowl Seasons Past

As I get ready for the bowl game watch-a-thon that starts at 2pm today, some fun images of games of the past.

First, check out this bowl game infographic that shows the explosion of games in the 2000's, thanks in part to ESPN craving live events.  "If you create them, we will come."

I find it interesting that there was a spike in games in 1948, up to 14, which had to be seen as excessive as the move to 40 games this year. Notice the 36% drop in games in 1949 - I somewhat expect that next year after the problems of having to put under .500 teams.

Past bowl games...

I always remember this game being the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl as it moved into Houston's Astrodome.  It had a long history from 1959 to 1987.  Bowl games returned to Houston in 2000 as bowl expansion got underway.

There could not be a more 1980 looking graphic than this program for the 1980 Cotton Bowl Classic.

Just like the Bluebonnet Bowl, the Liberty Bowl started in 1959 but this one is still going strong.  This program looks like it was thrown together in about 10 minutes. "Ahhh, just throw the bell on there, the service logos and a hey, what about a giant star, people love giant stars!"

BYU took on Oklahoma State in this game - I guess they thought it would look good to mix the modern stadium image with the old timey football team.  Who knows.  The Tangerine Bowl has gone through several names changes.  From Tangerine to Florida Citrus as America's taste in fruit was evolving (?), to Capital One as corporate sponsorship became king, to a short stint as the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl and now back to fruit with the Citrus Bowl.

Enjoy the games.
