Outback/Citrus/Fiesta

Pretty good day so far for the Big 10, except for you Northwestern, go sit in the corner with the Spartans.

Northwestern vs. Tennessee

Despite the outcome of the Cotton Bowl, I love the SEC/Big 10 games but I didn't love this game for Northwestern.  The Wildcats just don't score - a NU/Florida game would have been a better match up.

I watched the full first quarter and some of the second and had to move on to the next game.  Boy No. 1 was away and Boy No. 2 had homework (what kind of teacher gives kids homework over winter break?)

The Vols opened the scoring with a touchdown and Northwestern just sputtered about.  Tennessee poured it on late, 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Tennessee 45  Northwestern 6

My pick:  Vols, baby - that's a team on the rise.

Game notes:

-The Wildcats were 2-0 this season when head coach Pat Fitzgerald wears shorts instead of pants.

The third time was not a charm. Looks like Fitz has been hitting the weights.  Swole...

-What did I eat?  Nacho cheese dip with expired salsa, chips.  Mrs. Keith noticed the fresh salsa expired in late November.  Only time will tell what happens but at least it was some sort of vegetable like substance.

-What you can eat.  A free Outback Bloomin' Onion.

Tennessee's win gets you a free one, but only on January 2nd.

-Player swag:  Pretty solid - $150 Best Buy gift card; Outback Steakhouse gift card; Fossil watch; Jostens ring; cap.  Someone give Fitz their gift card and let him get a steak.

Florida vs. Michigan
Seriously, why didn't they have Tennessee and Michigan play?  Another mismatch, with a Florida offense that cannot and would not score much.

Once again, a game where I caught the first quarter.  I wanted Boy No. 2 to watch but he wasn't having any of it, so instead of going to the Fiesta Bowl, I did my due diligence.

There was a glimmer of hope with a 7-7 tie game after the first quarter.  I wouldn't see the Michigan beat down of the Gators and I don't really care.  F-Michigan.

That made me feel a little better. It never gets old and I've seen it at least 30 times.

The Wolverines took out their loss to Ohio State on the Gators.

Michigan 41  Florida 7

My pick:  Michigan

Game notes:

-Big Chicken really loves bowl games.  Popeyes, Zaxby's, Chic-fil-a, Buffalo Wild Wings - college football fans eat a lot of chicken evidently.

-Jim Harbaugh does not appear to be a mentally stable adult.

His team won by 34.  Imagine if they lost.

What did I eat?  Nothing, this was an hour after I ate the chips, cheese and past its due date salsa.  I'm not some kind of animal.

Player swag:  Nice haul; $315 Best Buy shopping trip; Timely Watch Co. watch; EA Sports video game; ISlide footwear; beach towel.  Probably a trip to Disney World in there too.

This is actually the Battlefrog Fiesta Bowl, Mrs. Keith was really bugging about what Battlefrog was.  I told her it was a video game but she kept asking.  She's really talkative today, she must be tired of most of my somewhat undivided attention being focused on college football.

Ohio State vs. Notre Dame

The game of the whata-coulda-shoulda.  The Buckeyes were so close, except Michigan State made sure they went to Phoenix instead of Dallas. F-Ohio State too.

Actually, I don't have nearly the vitriol toward the Buckeyes and they looked great today against a team that lost to Clemson and Stanford by four points.  It was never in doubt.

I switched immediately to this game after my one full quarter in Orlando.  I didn't see the physical mauling of Notre Dame coming.  The Irish played tough all season, even with all the injuries.  They had a ton of depth and were so close to being undefeated.

It was 28-14 at half and it took an Irish touchdown right before half to keep it that close. The second half was a lot closer and actually really boring to watch. I would have really loved to have seen the Buckeyes blow out Notre Dame. Outside of Michigan, there is no team I despise more than the Irish.

Ohio State 44  Notre Dame 28

My pick:  Notre Dame, they showed so much fire all season and I thought the Buckeyes would come in not caring.

Game notes:

-As much as I can't stand Notre Dame, they were amazing all season in overcoming injuries.  Quarterbacks, running backs, defensive players.  Four freakin' points, but that's the game they play.  I also hope they go 0-12 next season, that would include a loss to MSU.

-Okay, Battlefrog.  Mrs. Keith persisted and I looked it up. It's some sort of endurance running and obstacle course that moves city to city through year.  If you'd like to participate in Cincinnati, the discounted race is $68.  That's a lot of cash to run in mud, water and up hills.

This doesn't look like fun. We're now an experiential society.  Paying $68 to run in the woods and mud sounds stupid but it's something you can post on social media.

This seems like a last minute grab at some cash by the Fiesta Bowl organizers after losing Tostitos and Vizio.  Another down side of the big six bowl games.  The Fiesta is no doubt the crappiest of the six and sponsors will be hard to come by when they don't host the playoffs.

What did I eat:  My go-to snack, Virginia peanuts and Snyder's of Hanover jalapeno pretzel bits.

Player swag:  Not really trying - Gift suite; Fossil watch; Ogio X-Fit backpack.  Maybe the Fiesta Bowl should get Fossil to jump on board.
